Have a Picnic
We all have to eat, so why not do it outside? Whether it’s a trip to the park, a hike to a scenic overlook, or simply stepping into your own backyard, enjoying a meal outdoors can turn an everyday routine into something memorable. Picnics invite us to slow down, soak up fresh air and much-needed vitamin D, and enjoy a calmer, low-stimulus environment. Eating outside naturally encourages mindfulness by helping us tune in to our food, our surroundings, and the people we’re sharing the moment with.
A picnic can also be a wonderful opportunity to engage your child before the meal even begins. Invite them to help plan, prepare, and pack the food by writing a list together and checking off items as they go. Trying out a new recipe adds another layer of fun while sneaking in learning through reading, measuring, and observing how ingredients come together. These small moments of involvement build independence, confidence, and connection making the picnic just as meaningful as the time spent eating outside together.
Having fun with this activity? Try these ideas:
Pick a theme for your picnic. For example, a rainbow of food or things that start with the same letter.
Bring music or stories to listen to while you eat.
Eat breakfast outside and pretend you’re camping.
