Read Under a Tree

The benefits of reading out loud to your child are well-documented, and when paired with the low-stimulus atmosphere of the natural world, the experience can be highly restorative. Reading under a tree offers a calm, inviting environment where children can focus more easily, engage their imaginations, and connect deeply with stories. The gentle sounds of nature and fresh air help reduce stress and mental fatigue, allowing both children and adults to be more present. This setting supports language development, listening skills, and emotional connection, while also fostering a positive association with books and learning.

Reading outdoors can be an activity in and of itself or a quiet option woven into a larger block of outdoor play. At Sprouts, we like to bring a blanket or tarp outside to create a flexible, welcoming space for reading, coloring, or journaling that children can access throughout their day. Having books available encourages self-directed learning and gives children the freedom to choose calm, reflective activities when they need a break from active play. Over time, these simple moments, like shared stories beneath a tree, can help cultivate a lifelong love of reading, curiosity, and a sense of peace in nature.

Having fun with this activity? Try these ideas:

  • Show your child how to make a nature mandala using found materials around them while they listen to a chapter book.

  • Browse an atlas, field guide, or nature anthology together and discuss what you find. The Wonders of Nature is a fantastic book to look at together!

  • Encourage your child to read or look at their own book while you read yours.
